A low credit score does not always mean a closed door, but it does mean fewer options, higher costs and a much higher risk of falling for fraud. This guide explains what lenders see when they look at a low score, the realistic ways to get a personal loan with a low CIBIL score, and how to rebuild your credit so the next loan is cheaper.

What counts as a low credit score?

Credit scores in India, from bureaus such as TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark, usually range from 300 to 900. Each lender sets its own cut-offs, but in general scores in the upper range are treated as strong, and the lower the score the harder it becomes to get an unsecured loan at a reasonable rate.

"No score" or "NH" (no history) is different from a low score. It means you have little or no credit record yet. Some lenders do lend to new-to-credit borrowers, often for smaller amounts.

Why is your score low? Find out first

Download your free credit report and look at what is pulling the score down. Common reasons:

  • Late or missed EMIs and credit card payments
  • Accounts marked "settled" or "written off"
  • Very high credit card use compared with your limit
  • Many loan applications in a short period
  • Being a guarantor or co-applicant on a loan that went bad
  • Errors: loans that are not yours, closed loans shown as open, or wrong overdue amounts

Errors can be disputed with the bureau, and fixing them can raise your score quickly. Our guide on improving your CIBIL score explains how.

Realistic options with a low score

1. Apply with a co-applicant

A spouse or family member with a good score and stable income can strengthen your application. Remember that they become equally responsible for repayment. Read co-applicants and guarantors explained.

2. Choose a secured loan instead

Lenders are more comfortable when there is security. Options include a top-up on your car loan, a loan against your car, a loan against property, a loan against fixed deposits, or a gold loan. Rates are usually lower than for unsecured loans.

3. Ask for a smaller amount

A smaller loan with a lower EMI is easier for a lender to approve. Borrow only what you genuinely need.

4. Try your own bank

The bank where your salary or business income is credited can see your account history, which sometimes helps when the score alone looks weak.

5. Show strong, stable income

Regular salary credits, a low existing EMI burden and a long time at the same job or business all help balance a weaker score.

What a low score costs you

Lenders charge more when risk is higher. On a ₹3 lakh personal loan for 3 years (illustrative rates):

RateEMITotal interest
14% a yearAbout ₹10,253About ₹69,100
18% a yearAbout ₹10,846About ₹90,400

That is over ₹21,000 extra for the same loan. Improving your score before borrowing, if you can wait, is often the best financial decision. Use the EMI calculator to check your own numbers.

Warning: low scores attract loan fraud

Fraudsters target people who have been rejected. Be very careful of anyone who:

  • Guarantees approval "regardless of CIBIL"
  • Asks for an advance fee, "file charge", "insurance" or "GST" before the loan is disbursed
  • Asks for your OTP, net banking password or remote access to your phone
  • Offers to "fix" or "delete" bad entries in your credit report for a fee
  • Contacts you through an unknown app that is not linked to an RBI-regulated lender

Genuine lenders disburse to your bank account and deduct fees from the loan or as shown in the Key Fact Statement. Read our guides on loan app fraud and RBI digital lending rules and spotting fake loan agents.

A simple plan to rebuild your score

  1. Pay every EMI and card bill on time, every month; set up auto-debit
  2. Bring credit card use down, ideally well below the limit
  3. Clear overdue amounts; where possible, close accounts fully rather than settling
  4. Dispute errors with the bureau and the lender
  5. Avoid new loan applications for a few months
  6. Check your report again after 3 to 6 months

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan with a "settled" account in my report?

It is harder, because "settled" tells lenders that the full amount was not repaid. Some lenders may consider you after some time has passed and your recent record is clean. Paying the remaining dues and getting the status updated to "closed" can help.

Will checking my own score lower it?

No. Checking your own credit report is a soft enquiry and does not affect your score.
