Most car loan delays have nothing to do with eligibility. They happen because a document is missing, out of date or does not match another document. This car loan documents checklist covers what salaried employees, self-employed professionals and business owners usually need, plus the car-related papers and the small mismatches that hold up approval.

Each lender has its own list, so treat this as a strong starting point and confirm with the lender before you submit.

Documents everyone needs

Identity and address (KYC)

  • PAN card, which lenders require for loans
  • Aadhaar, usually verified through e-KYC or masked copies
  • Other address proof if your current address differs from Aadhaar, such as a utility bill, rent agreement or passport
  • Recent passport-size photographs, if the lender asks

Bank statements

Usually the last 6 months for salaried applicants and 6 to 12 months for self-employed applicants. The account where your salary or business income comes in matters most. Lenders check regular credits, existing EMIs, bounced cheques and average balance.

Extra documents for salaried applicants

  • Salary slips for the last 2 to 3 months
  • Form 16 or ITR for the last year, especially for larger loans
  • Employment proof such as an appointment letter or employee ID, if asked

Extra documents for self-employed applicants

  • ITRs for the last 2 years, with computation of income
  • Profit and loss account and balance sheet, often for 2 years
  • Business proof: GST registration, shop and establishment licence, Udyam registration or trade licence
  • Proof of business continuity, often for 2 to 3 years
  • For professionals: a degree or practice registration certificate

Self-employed applicants have a few more choices to make. Our guide to car loans for the self-employed covers them in detail.

Extra documents for companies and firms

  • Partnership deed, or certificate of incorporation with MOA and AOA
  • Board resolution or authority letter for the loan
  • KYC of partners or directors
  • Audited financials and ITRs of the entity

Car-related documents

For a new car

  • Proforma invoice or quotation from the dealer, showing the ex-showroom price, registration, insurance and accessories separately
  • Booking receipt and margin money (down payment) receipt

For a used car

  • Copy of the RC (registration certificate)
  • Valid insurance policy and PUC certificate
  • Valuation report from the lender's approved valuer
  • If the seller had a loan on the car: the old lender's NOC and Form 35, so the old hypothecation is removed
  • Sale agreement and transfer forms (Form 29 and Form 30)

For more on used cars, read our used car loan guide.

After approval: what you will sign

  • Loan agreement and the sanction letter
  • Key Fact Statement (KFS), which shows the annual percentage rate, fees and repayment schedule. Read it before signing.
  • e-NACH or other auto-debit mandate for EMIs
  • Hypothecation form, so the lender's name is recorded on the RC

Common mismatches that delay approval

  • Name spelt differently on PAN, Aadhaar and bank account
  • Old address on Aadhaar when you have moved
  • Date of birth mismatch between PAN and Aadhaar
  • Salary credited in cash or to an account you did not submit
  • Unexplained large deposits in the bank statement
  • Bounced EMIs or cheques in the last few months
  • Blurred or partially cropped scans

Fixing these before you apply saves days. Update Aadhaar online where possible, and keep one consistent spelling of your name across documents.

Tips for a faster application

  • Scan documents as clear PDFs, one file per document
  • Download bank statements directly from net banking
  • Keep the dealer quotation with the price break-up ready
  • Share your current EMIs honestly; they show up in your credit report anyway
  • Share documents only with the lender or a known facilitator, never with unknown callers

Keep your documents safe

Loan documents carry everything a fraudster needs. When you share copies, write the purpose and date across them, for example "For car loan application only, dated ...". Never share OTPs, net banking passwords or blank signed cheques with anyone who calls you about a loan. A genuine lender or facilitator will never ask for an advance fee to release a loan. Our guide on how to spot fake loan agents lists the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aadhaar mandatory for a car loan?

PAN is required for loans. Aadhaar is widely used for e-KYC, but lenders may accept other officially valid documents for address proof. Ask your lender which options they accept.

Can I get a car loan without ITR?

Salaried applicants can often apply with salary slips and bank statements. Self-employed applicants usually need ITRs, though some lenders have programmes based on banking or other proof of income, usually with different terms.

Do I need a guarantor?

Not usually. A lender may ask for a co-applicant or guarantor if your income is low or your credit history is thin. See co-applicants and guarantors explained.
